The spelling of verbs often changes when the tense changes.
PRESENT TENSE Add nothing ----- Usually add nothing to verbs used with plural subjects. Frogs eat insects. My parents travel alone.
Add -s ----- Usually add -s to verbs used with singular subjects. A frog eats insects. My father travels along.
Add -es ----- Add -es to verbs with singular subjects which end in -s, -z, -ch, -sh, -x. boss = bosses box = boxes blush = blushes buzz = buzzes smash = smashes
Add -es ----- For verbs ending with a consonant and -y, change the y to i and add es. worry = worries dry = dries
PAST TENSE Drop the e ----- When a verb ends in e, drop the e and add ed. smile = smiled race = raced
Double the consonant ----- For verbs ending with a consonant after a short vowel, double the final consonant before adding ed. shop = shopped hop = hopped Exception: x
Consonant and y ----- For verbs ending with a consonant and y, change the y to i and add ed. carry = carried dry = dried
