Did you know "Peter Pan", Treasure Island" and "Ivanhoe", were all written by Scottish authors?
The Scottish are responsible for developing the Ayrshire Aberdee-Angus, Galloway, and Highland cattle breeds?
They also developed the collie dog, the Clydesdale horse, and the Shetland pony.

Welcome to Glamis Castle ..... 'A place of legends and fairytales.' Family home of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne and a royal residence since 1372. Childhood home of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, birthplace of Her Royal Highness The Princess Margaret and legendary setting for Shakespeare's famous play 'Macbeth' www.glamis-castle.co.uk/Located in Scotland near the village of Glamis, 5 miles west of Forfar, Glamis Castle resides. One of the things that it is most famous for is that it was the setting for Shakespear's "Macbeth". Among the oldest and most haunting parts of the castle is Duncan's Hall, which commemorates the slaying of King Duncan by Macbeth. Although the actual killing took place near Elgin, this is the traditional Shakespearean scene of the crime. Glamis is the ancestral home of the Lyon, now Bowes-lyon family. At the head are the Earls of Strathmore, who, though ennobled three times before, became Scottish Earls in 1677 and UK Earls only in 1937, when Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon, Duchess of York, became Queen of England, later Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother who's childhood home was Glamis. Princess Margaret was born at Glamis and it also has the room where King Malcolm of Scotland died after being wounded in battle. The Castle was visited by Mary Queen of Scots on 22nd August, 1562. The famous secret chamber is said to be known only to the Laird and his heir. The Castle has many legends and secrets surrounding it. more... www.castleofspirits.com/glamis2.html

It is also interesting to note that much of the "evolution" school of thought is brought to us from Scotland.

Highland Clans "Highland Clans" is a term that refers to the tribes of Scotland, small family-based groups with a common surname. The word "clan" indicates the principle of kin - the bond which united the members of the Highland tribes, and to their chiefs. The Highland clans probably were Celtic in origin though a Saxon or a Norman stranger could found a clan by collecting followers from a broken or chieftainless Celtic tribe. The Roman historian Tacitus wrote that inhabitants of Caledonia were divided into a number of tribes, each headed by a chief. According to Tacitus these tribes were independent and often at war with each other, only uniting under an elected leader when faced with a common external enemy. Initially there were also clans in the lowland Border regions however these were broken up relatively early in comparison with the Highland clans which continued to flourish until the middle of the 18th century. Even today the spirit of clanship survives in the habits, opinions and passions of the Highland people. In the old genealogies each tribe could be traced to a common ancestor, from whom all the different branches or clans are supposed to have descended. Today Scottish people make up an estimated 1% of the world's population and people with Scottish heritage live in many countries throughout the world. If you have a Scottish heritage or family name there are many sites that allow you to search for your clan and give tips in tracing your clan and finding your associated tartan.
