Homer (Greek: Ὅμηρος, Hómēros) was a legendary early Greek poet and aoidos (rhapsode) traditionally credited with the composition of the Iliad and the Odyssey. The poems are often dated to the 8th or 7th century BC; whether Homer himself was the actual composer of his works, or whether he was largely indebted to oral transmission, is debated by scholars. Homer's works begin the Western Canon and are universally praised as brilliant. By convention, their composition is also often taken to initiate the period of Classical Antiquity.

Homeric scholarship From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Homeric scholarship is the study of Homeric epic, especially the two large surviving epics the Iliad and Odyssey. It is currently part of the academic discipline of classical studies, but the subject is one of the very oldest topics in all scholarship or science, and goes back to antiquity. Purely in terms of quantity it is one of the largest of all literary sub-disciplines: the annual publication output rivals that on Shakespeare. For the purpose of the present article, Homeric scholarship is divided into three main phases: antiquity; the 18th and 19th centuries; and the 20th century and later. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeric_scholarshipMore to come
