Yet another victory for bee's home-school rep

"Enthusiasm" was the word of the day Saturday at the Riley County Spelling bee.
No, that doesn't describe the contestants' mood; "n-e-r-v-o-u-s" would be a more apt characterization. It's the word Aubrey Cole, an eight-grade homeschooled student, correctly spelled to take the county crown. She'll represent Riley at the state spelling bee in Topeka next month.
Cole, who outspelled 13 other contestants over 17 rounds to claim her title, is the third consecutive victor to represent the county's home-schooled population. Erin Keeley won the title in 2003 and again in 2004.
"I don't really work on spelling" in school,'' Cole said. Rather, she said, she reads a lot and just notices words.
The final three rounds were between Cole and Audrey Ballard, an eighth-grader at Eisenhower Middle School. Ballard incorrectly spelled "aromatic" as "aeromatic," leaving Cole to correctly spell that word and then finish up with "enthusiasm."
The other contestants and their schools were:
Kayla Mohnsen, grade 5, Amanda Arnold Elementary.
• Vamsi Bhadriraju, grade 5, Bergman Elementary.
• Anaha Uppal, grade 4, Lee Elementary.
• Graceanne Stark, grade 5, Marlatt Elementary.
• Nathaniel Pennell, grade 6, Northview Elementary.
• Ryan Barrer, grade 5, Ogden Elementary.
• Shawn Sheu, grade 5, Theodore Roosevelt Elementary.
• Samantha Wilson, grade 5, Woodrow Wilson Elementary.
• Olivia McCoy, grade 8, Manhattan Catholic Schools.
• Jillian Stauffer, grade 8, Susan B. Anthony Middle School.
• Kallie Mahaffey, grade 8, Blue Valley Middle School.
• Cambria McDonald, grade 7, Riley County Middle School.
