Students try hand at robotics in Mindstorms

The fifth annual Wichita State University Legos Mindstorms Robotics Challenge was hosted Feb. 26 by the colleges of education and engineering at WSU.
The event was designed to give students a chance to apply math, science, programming and engineering skills, and to promote teamwork, dedication and sportsmanship.
Students in fourth through eighth grades participated.
Apprentice level
The Apprentice Level category included these area schools: Buckner Performing Arts Magnet Middle School, Cleaveland Traditional Magnet Elementary School, Gammon Elementary School, Pleasant Valley Middle School, Douglass Middle School, Magdalen Catholic School and St. Jude's Catholic School.
The Gammon Red Hot Robots took second place overall. First place went to a McPherson homeschool group.
Event high score honors went to St. Jude Lavelle's Levelers in Line Follower with 1,000 points; and the Magdalen Mites, Pleasant Valley Royal Bots and Gammon Red Hot Robots, each with 1,000 points, in Table Runner.
Judge's Choice awards, based on best teamwork and best robot, went to the St. Jude Z's Zingers in Line Follower, Magdalen Robo Rebels in Table Runner and Pleasant Valley Royal Bots in Robot Race.
