Girl wins northern Idaho spelling bee, trip to D.C. 10:14 AM MST on Monday, March 20, 2006 Associated Press COEUR D'ALENE -- Ten-year-old Rachel Pinkerton won the North Idaho Spelling Bee in Coeur d'Alene, earning her a trip to the nation's capitol in May to compete against the country's best spellers. On Saturday in Coeur d'Alene, Rachel competed against 45 other kids from 12 districts. She won by correctly spelling the word stygian, meaning dark or dismal. She says she's been studying hard every day before and after she attends home school. Rachel says she doesn't have any tricks, she just advises spelling-bee hopefuls to stay calm. In Washington, she'll compete against more than 300 kids starting May 31 at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The winner will take home more than $50,000 in cash and prizes. www.ktvb.com/news/localnews/stories/ktvbn-mar2006-spelling_bee_champ.4398185e.html
