Instant gratification:
I think the key to success for a new learner is to show them that it is not as hard as they think to play the guitar. In country music for example, a basic knowledge of 6 or 7 chords and a good strum technique, and they can play just about any song they want to.
The hardest thing for a beginner, is to toughen up those chording fingers. You have to build a good calluse on the tips of your fingers. Yes it will hurt for the first couple of weeks, but if you hang in there and not stop, a good callus will build up pretty quick. For this reason I always suggest new learners start on a nylon string guitar. This makes it much easier to deal with the sore finger issue.

Nylon string (or classical or spanish) guitars look like this and are very inexpensive. Don't make the mistake of purchasing an expensive guitar if you are just learning and just starting out.

I would love to see this thread develop more this year if at all possible. Missy has a guitar and what better way for her to learn how to play it. Hint Hint

Tell Missy I will put up a lot more stuff on this just for her very soon. I know she will be able to catch on quickly, she is one smart young lady. :-)

I am hoping she will be able to play a song or two for our Christmas program.
