I have been playing guitar for 34 years (tells ya how old I am LOL).
I have given lessons to many beginning pickers. One thing I can tell you all is that if you can learn some basic chords (about 20), you can play just about any song you ever want to play. Those who have an ear for music will pick up the technique pretty fast.
You will start out learning to strum your guitar and soon you will also be picking.

When you look at a chord chart, you will see numbers in a circle like the chords above. Hold out your hand in front of you. Your pointer finger is 1, middle finger is 2 and ring finger is 3. Placing the finger number on the proper string and holding it firmly down on the string will produce the sound effect you want.
