This thread will hpefully assist you in your school room teaching root words, their meaning and usage. Early in your child's learning we use phonics to teach our kids how to sound out words. ROOTS will teach them how to recognize the meaning of words they have never seen before. I have used several programs to teach my child root words and meanings. This thread will list one root word per day and give it's meaning. One suggestion is to have your child write a paragraph per day and use at least three words derived from the daily root word in the paragraph. Use the dictionary to find more words and meanings. This is a wonderful program for teaching roots: www.literacyunlimited.com/Root word games www.funbrain.com/roots/index.htmlWord Roots and Prefixes www.virtualsalt.com/roots.htmGreek and Latin Root Words www.awrsd.org/oak/Library/greek_and_latin_root_words.htmGREEK ROOT WORDS www.resaacademy.org/greek.htmThese are just a few links and you may find many more on the net to help in your study. One really good idea is to have a root word per day and paste it in large letters on an index card and make a "train" across your school room with all the words learned. I hope you will enjoy this study and find this thread helpful.

One other thing that is very important. As your child grows and expands his/her vocabulary skills, they will need to know these roots in order to perform well. Standardized tests focus a lot on vocabulary as well. Having a good knowledge of Greek and Latin roots will mean your child will perform well on those tests.
