Hope everyone is having a great day - hi,
My name is Jeff Otto and I am a credentialed single-subject teacher in California. My credential is currently expired, though it's renewable. (I've been a good boy) I have most recently ran a business called SF Scooter as I am a skilled two stroke engine mechanic as well as having a passion for skiing, wakeboarding and at one time scooters - it's like wakeboarding on solid ground...
My true love is furniture design and maximizing the value of any tree I am allowed to cut with my chainsaws. Firewood is always secondary in my mind... When I attended Fresno State I was awarded the Jeffrey B Noakes "Outstanding Craftsman award." Upon graduating I was offered a part time position teaching wood classes at Fresno State University, which I did for 2.5 years. It introduced me to teaching, a field I had never before considered.
Later I decided to get my high school credential, which I did and then upon completion I moved back to the Bay area and taught at Cupertino High and also Monte Vista high (part time). Monte Vista, through no help from me, was the fifth highest rated high school in CA at one time, I'm sure it's still very high. My full time campus, Cupertino was "Blue Ribbon" school the year before I arrived and was rated at about hundreth best in Ca when I attended. (Blue Ribbon awards and raw test score comparisons in Ca, do not coincide - it didn't drop dramtically the year I joined - phew)
Anyhow, before I get lost in my own post, I taught high school in the bay area for 3.5 years before I started SF Scooter. In total I have 6 years of teaching experience when you include college part-time and high school. If I was to grade my teaching ability, I would honsetly give myself a C+. I said being honest, which I am
I signed up here to help ANY student or home school parent in these specific fields of my expertise:
Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) - specifically three view (orthographic projection) drawings of furniture, houses, etc.
Woodworking - any and all - bring it on. I hope to spend the remainder of my life launching myself into my true calling, beautiful, environmentally-sound, traditionally built furniture of unique design.
Welding - specifically MIG - I'm getting pretty darn good and have sources in case you stump me.
I'm looking for a job (not teaching ) and am busy but I hope to be helpfull and check in daily or almost there so. I will happily give my phone number out to anyone needing to talk and of course I'll answer any questions here or via e-mail: jotto@sti.net (I'm kinda lame/slow and only check e-mail weekly maybe ) Eventually I hope to post short lesson plans or quick how-tos.
In about 6 months my shop will be fully-functional and I can post specific wood projects I tackle and the ways I build, with photos. It will be hopefully inspirational and lead to questions, students exploring their desire to be a "craftsman."
As a dual degree'd person, I love to work with my hands and eyes most. I am blue collar with an attitude. I get a kick from inspiring kids and love following God's will. Thanks for reading.
Jeff
PS: bring on the questions, and ideas how I can aide this site and it's members.
