Homeschoolers have long since broken the “barriers” of socialization issues and now enjoy every benefit a school aged child could imagine. For many homeschool parents, the issue of sports has been an area in which we would all love to have more choices. As a parent of a very bright and athletic homeschooled child, I have spent a lot of time seeking out options for my son
in order to compete in competitive sports.
My son started taking karate many years ago at a local recreation center. Today he is awaiting the test for his Second Degree Black belt in the art of Koden Kempo Jutsu. He moved to a couple of dojos before finding a home where he studies now in a Christian environment. In all the years of locating good local Recreation centers in nearby areas, I noticed how many sports programs they had to offer in many sports including karate, baseball, soccer, gymnastics, swimming, football and more.
This year marks the fifth year my son has played on a local county baseball league through a Rec. Dept. There is no reason for any homeschooler to have to lack in the area of sports. Many larger counties have so much to offer, that your child could take a different sport each year and never try them all.
All homeschool families should also be aware of The Home School Sports Network.

You can find many different sports leagues in your state through this network as well. Sports is alive and well in the Homeschool world. Scouts searching for new talent is also becoming very commonplace. Visit www.hslda.org for more information.
Keep a record of the activities your child has participated in like the one my son has here:

A little research and your child can be playing the sport of his or her choice in no time. The only limits homeschoolers have are the ones we choose to set. Now get out there and play some ball.
