It is thought that Edward Hicks painted the theme of the Peaceable Kingdom as many as one hundred times. There are several possible reasons for his attachment to the subject, including his love of children and animals and his devotion to the Bible. A more complex explanation involved the fact that he was a Quaker minister, and Quakers disapproved of nonutilitarian art such as easel painting. However, because Hicks knew no other profitable trade and since Quaker ministers were not permitted salaries, he needed the income from his painting to support his large family. The Peaceable Kingdom, as a religious subject and a kind of visual sermon, perhaps helped Hicks to justify his vocation. The theme comes from the Book of Isaiah, Chapter XI, Verses 6-9, in the Bible, interpreted by Christianity as a prophecy of the coming of Christ and the arrival of a peaceful world, in which all animals and human beings live in harmony and prosperity. The painting follows Isaiah closely in its details, and all of the following vignettes described in the Bible passage are included: "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb , And the leopard shall lie down with the kid ; And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little child shall lead them [lower right corner]. And the cow and the bear shall feed [next to the tree in the upper right];…And the lion shall eat straw like the ox

1780—1849, American painter and preacher, b. Bucks co., Pa. A member of the Society of Friends, he became a noted back-country preacher in the conservative group of Quakers associated with his cousin Elias Hicks. He supported himself by painting carriages, signs, furniture, and the like. Hicks's fame rests mainly on the painting The Peaceable Kingdom, nearly 100 versions of which he is believed to have executed, 62 of them still extant. A completely untrained primitive artist who developed considerable skill during his nearly 30 years of easel painting, he borrowed many of his early animal groups from European engravings. His paintings, which also include farm groups and animal portraits, have great charm and appeal. In his day Hicks was known mainly as a preacher. education.yahoo.com/reference/encyclopedia/entry?id=21888

Edward Hicks was born in Pennsylvania in 1780. His mother died the very next year and he was raised by a Quaker family. He didn't do well in school, so his parents decided that he should work for a coachmaker. He enjoyed this very much and learned skills which helped him to become a painter. He married, and he and his wife, Sarah had four children. At one time he became very ill, and as a result, he began to think more seriously about his life. He started attending the Quaker church. They believed in peace and brotherly love. He was making a living as a coachmaker. He would paint signs and coaches, but he was interested in becoming a minister. He was a popular preacher. As he studied the Bible, he concentrated on the book of Isaiah. He especially liked the part in chapter 11 where Isaiah wrote, "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf and the young lion and fatling together; and a little child shall lead them." He began to paint pictures about "The Peaceable Kingdom". In fact, he painted at least 60, and some say 100 pictures with this title. He became an art teacher later in his life and lived to be 69 years old. The story of Noah, which he painted in this picture, can be found in the Bible in Genesis chapters 6-9. www.gardenofpraise.com/art2.htm
