Helping Verbs
A helping verb helps a main verb name its action.
Examples: The boy is running. is=helping verb running=main verb The boy has run. has=helping verb run=main verb The boy did run. did=helping verb run=main verb
The most common helping verbs are forms of be, have and do.
Verb Present Tense Past Tense Future Tense be am, is, are was, were will be have have, has had will have do do, does did will do
To be - If a form of be is used by itself, it is a linking verb. I am a senior. If a form of be is used with a main verb, it is a helping verb. I am going to the show. To have - A form of have is usually used with a main verb as a helping verb: Ben has gone to New York. Have is also a main verb implying possession. I have a dream. To do - If a form of do is used by itself, it is a main verb. Mac does well in school. If do is used with a main verb, it is a helping verb. Did you go to the park?
Together, a helping verb and a main verb make a verb phrase. Helping Verbs, Exercise 1. Underline the main verb. Circle the helping verb.
1. I have listened to many types of music. 2. My brother is studying Spanish. 3. Some people have changed addresses. 4. Our neighbors were living in the country until last year. 5. OK - we've covered Action Verbs, Linking Verbs & Helping Verbs! Next we'll move on to Irregular Verbs, Verb Tense, Subject-Verb Agreement & Past Participle.
I'm going to try to put up a "Final Test" on verbs once we finish!

Verbs not only show action or link subject to predicate, but they also indicate time. This TIME is called TENSE.
Here are three tenses of time:
Present tense verbs show that action happens now. I work hard. (action verb) I am hungry. (linking verb) Past tense verbs show that action has happened already. I worked yesterday. I was hungry. Future tense verbs show that action will happen. I will work tomorrow. I will be hungry.
Will or shall are always signals of the future tense.
Verb Tense, Exercise 1. Underline the verb in each sentence. Write its tense(present tense, past tense, or future tense) beside the sentence.
1. I go to school. 2. I will wear new shoes. 3. The flag waved in the wind. 4. Christmas comes once a year. 5. The men will arrive tomorrow. 6. Mark plays in the band. 7. Thank you! Hope you guys can use what I've got here! I'm using it with my kids! After verbs, I'm thinking, nouns & pronouns, then adjectives & adverbs, then move on to sentences.
I'm also planning to do Capitalization & Punctuation simultaneously with the above parts of speech.
